Driven by his interest in the history of medicine, Bertocco explores the figure of Franco Basaglia, the intellectual and reformer of modern psychiatry, focusing on his experience in Brazil.
Developed through meetings, research and fieldwork, the project – which includes videos and photographs – retraces the stages of Basaglia’s journey and examines the lasting impact of his presence on the anti-asylum movement in the country, exploring themes such as the history of the perception and treatment of mental illness, the concepts of infrastructure, control, total institutions, and confinement reserved for those perceived as different or outsiders.
In Breaking the Circuit of Control, Francesco Bertocco – who has long been interested in the history of medicine and therapeutic methods – focuses on the figure, thought, methods and influence of Franco Basaglia, an intellectual and reformer of modern psychiatry. In particular, the project centres on Basaglia’s experience in Brazil and its implications.
