Migrant and refugee women are at the heart of Ri-scatti’s new project, titled PRIMA CHE SIA NOTTE (tr. BEFORE NIGHT FALLS), on view from 10th to 25th October. The project was conceived and organised by PAC Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea in Milan and RISCATTI ODV—the volunteer association that has been developing projects aimed at fostering social empowerment through photography since 2014—in collaboration with the Milano Welcome Center of the Municipality of Milan and promoted by the Municipality of Milan with the support of Tod’s.
The exhibition explores what it means to experience migration as a woman: preserving one’s own story, navigating new contexts, redefining one’s role, relationships and motherhood, accessing rights and opportunities, and building one’s future day by day, moving away from that darkness which has too often limited their freedom in search of “light” elsewhere—a sense of serenity and hope for a better future. For the migrant and refugee women welcomed and supported by the Milano Welcome Center, the city of Milan is today a space where to recognise themselves, gain greater awareness and tell their stories; for the public, the exhibition will offer an opportunity to understand, through the images taken by the project participants, the complexity and significance of an experience that too often remains invisible.
